Brown eggs are more nutritious than white eggs?
I was surprised to learn that 99% of consumers believe that brown eggs are the healthiest!
Fact: The color of the egg, the size of the egg, or the breed of the chicken have nothing to do with the nutritional quality of the egg. It's all about what goes into the egg.
Fact: Eggs from poultry raised on pasture have 10% less fat, 40% more vitamin A and 400% more omega-3's.
This week we ran out of eggs. Not the commercial, store-boughten brown or white eggs, but the yummy grass-fed ones! I had it all under control, though, since I was already planning on stopping at Slowpokes Local Food Store to pick some up.
(Amazingly, this was only the third time I'd been to Slowpokes. Every day on my way to work for the past 8 months, I had driven maybe within a quarter of a mile of it and never even knew it existed until recently.)
After making my purchases I drove away savoring my freshly homemade sweet potato biscuit. Absolutely delicious! Suddenly, I felt energized and satisfied. And why shouldn't I? The quality of the ingredients in that biscuit were top-notch. No artificial flavors, no artifical colors, no artificial sweeteners, no fillers, no gluten-- just highly nutritional natural ingredients.
Anyway, I was almost home when it suddenly dawned on me that I had forgotten to pick up eggs; the main reason I had stopped there in the first place!
No worries. I had another new lead to check out, Jeff-leen Farms, a local supplier of "pastured" eggs.
(This is so much fun! I feel like a local food source detective. )
My Opinion: There is no comparison in taste or quality between commercially-produced eggs and the naturally-produced eggs. No comparison!
With up to 75% of processed foods containing genetically modified ingredients, I want to know who the producer of my food is, where it is produced and how it is produced! Buying locally satisfies all of these requirements for me.
Giving more exposure to these wonderful local businesses through my blog links makes me feel like I'm truly making a difference that will have far-reaching healthy ramifications for myself, my family and my community.
Starting on September 17th and each subsequent Monday I'd like to introduce my "Favorite Local Pick of the Week". Stay tuned!
