Back in March my oldest son was preparing to give an informative speech in one of his college classes. He chose to research and speak on the topic of genetically modified foods (GMO). He was to present both the pros and cons of this ongoing debate.
When he was all done he let me take a look at his outline. It really piqued my curiosity as GM foods were something that I been told to avoid buying, although I didn't really know much more than that about the whole issue.
As I searched the internet I came across a site by the Union of Concerned Scientists. There I found a map of the Pharma Crop Approvals in the United States.
Being from a state where the agricultural industry is so critical, I was particularly interested to see where my home state ranked. What I found was not very reassuring at all! Of all the 48 lower states, Wisconsin was ranked #1 in the planting of Pharma Crops!
Even more disturbing to me was all the information or rather lack of information in the Search Records Database for Wisconsin. How many times did it say there that corn or soybeans were “engineered with an unidentified gene taken from an unidentified organism to produce an unidentified industrial enzyme”? Unidentified... unidentified... unidentified—all in the name of confidential business information. Too many unanswered questions to my liking!
All this did was convince me even more of the need to buy locally from a source that I know is not growing GMO crops or feeding it to their livestock. I also read all labels before buying any food items.
You know it would have been funny if it hadn’t been so tragic. When my son finished his presentation to his Speech class, he observed a number of dismayed expressions, and finally someone asked, “Wow, then what can we eat?”
If I had been in my son’s class that day this would have been my recommendation to his classmates: Please check out this valuable article written by Dr. Mercola as well as the information at The True Food Shopping Guide.
Then eat healthy! Be happy!
