Just think this discussion started when I asked myself one simple little question, "Where in the world did that delicious hunk of tenderloin at my niece's wedding reception come from?"
Hey! Everyone knows that the "animal-turned-tenderloin" was once romping happily with its buddies in a luscious grass-filled pasture, basking in the bright sunlight and drinking from a sparkling stream of clear blue water!
Hmmm. I actually read somewhere that the dairy and beef industries send free school curriculums to teachers that propagate this appealing image while at the same time promoting the consumption of their "health-filled" meat and pasteurized dairy products.
What a brilliant marketing plan! Most of those children have parents and grandparents whose goals are to provide the highest nutritional content available to their families. Well, at least most of the time!
My curiosity got the best of me, and I did a search (Isn't the internet marvelous?). Within seconds I was taken to a site with a complete downloadable curriculum just as I described!
What I read and observed created some very mixed emotions in me. I am still trying to decide if I should cry in disbelief or scream in total frustration!
The rosy-colored portrait of the happy animal raised so lovingly and sent so peacefully off to "market" is in such stark contrast to what the the majority of the animals that end up on our dinner plates actually go through.
If you want a real "lesson" in what our children are being taught, click on each one of the links on this website. (I'm just using this one site as an example. There are others out there). Don't forget to check out the worksheets as well.
Then please let me know if you had the same reaction as I did after you read the "facts".
It is incredibly unbelievable to read the continual drumbeat that the cattle's best interest as well as our best interests are paramount! They even justify the use of antibiotics and hormones as being critical for the health of the animal, which in turn translates to our health, too!
A novel idea! Throw out your prescriptions, you can get antibiotics through your meat consumption instead. Well, maybe there are fewer side effects that way!
Seriously though, they actually have the gall to say that these chemical additives are "carefully" regulated and that "ALL beef is safe" for us to consume whether it is organic or not. Even the meat laden with antibiotics, growth hormones or the other added chemicals is totally safe!
Maybe I should do another search to see who paid for the studies that scientifically proved the absolute safety of this "modified" meat called beef!
Let's have no more sugarcoating and manipulation of the FACTS!
Knowledge is power! We must not let someone else do our thinking for us! We need to educate ourselves!
I can always tell when I'm a little worked-up. Almost every one of my sentences ends with an exclamation point!
